Job Search like a presidential campaign

Why You Need to Run Your Job Search Like a Presidential Campaign

The political campaign season is coming to an end, but if you are looking to get ahead at work or find employment, you should take note on the candidates’ strategies to win the White House.
By approaching your job search as if you’re running for office, you’ll be better prepared to rise above the competition and achieve your career goals.
Most people have more than one job in their career since each job should serve as a stepping stone for the career you want, says Amanda Augustine, job search expert at TheLadders. “If you don’t manage your career, no one else will.”
Just like presidential candidates market their platform to voters, your job search is also a marketing campaign and your platform should highlight your skills and experience that will help convince an employer why you’re the most qualified candidate, says Brent Rasmussen, CareerBuilder’s president of North America. “You have to appeal to different constituents who will hire you since, in most interviews, you don’t just interview with one person and there’s a consensus.”
By focusing on your campaign and actively managing your career, when you’re ready to make a proactive move, you’ll have the right foundation in place to help you get there, says Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter, Glassdoor careers and workplace expert. The fundamentals of running for president are similar to any job hunt.
Lobby for Support
“You need supporters, people who will recommend you for the job,” says Rasmussen. As part of your job campaign, experts recommend seeking out people who will serve as mentors to help you grow and move to the next level.
“Advocates can help a tremendous amount,” says Nicole Williams, LinkedIn’s career expert. When you’re doing anything new, you have to act on your own merits, but having an experienced professional to qualify and recommend you can help push you along.
To find potential mentors, Williams suggests looking for people with strong track records in your chosen industry. “Getting endorsed by the right people can be a great way to help you achieve your career goals.”
“Networking internally and externally is equally important,” says Rasmussen. Reach out to people you admire and ask how they got to that position.
A mentor can serve as a reference, make introductions and teach softer, industry-specific skills needed to climb the corporate ladder, says Augustine. “At best, they’re going to vouch for your skillset and sell your merit.”
Rasmussen adds that once you get elected and hired by an employer, you must start working on your approval ratings.  “You need trusted advisors, whether that’s your boss or another mentor, and if you’re in a management position, you need to assemble a good cabinet—you need strong players to strategize with and execute on initiatives.”
Manage Your Campaign On and Offline
“Have an online personal brand that’s in alignment with your offline personal brand,” says Augustine. When launching your job-search campaign, use a variety of resources like job boards, staffing firms, social media as well as in-person networking opportunities.
“There comes a time when you have to do the work and unless you do the work, you won’t be able to pitch,” says Williams. It’s just as important to build your skillset and refine your message as it is to campaign. The more you campaign, the more aware people become about you.
Experts suggest tailoring your pitch to your target market—recruiters, networking contacts, hiring managers and interviewers. Having a polished, unified brand will help people looking for your talents find you, says Augustine.
Kiss the Babies
“Shaking hands means a lot to people, whether in person or by social media,” says Williams. Companies don’t always post open positions and people in your network can give access to word-of-mouth opportunities.
As you meet people, they’ll remember your attitude more than anything so stay positive and energetic. “Enthusiasm and energy is important in any conversation—the energy and focus influences and impresses the other person at the meeting table,” says Barrett-Poindexter.
To develop a genuine connection with people, make small talk, ask questions and listen, recommends Augustine. “Exchange contact information and follow up. Connect through LinkedIn and be sure to maintain these new relationships,” says Augustine.
Know Your Constituency
“People hire people who they’re most comfortable with and have the most confidence in to grow an initiative,” says Rasmussen.
As you look for opportunities, you want to match your skills with what an employer or boss wants by gearing your pitch towards your constituents, adds Williams. “If the goal is to get a job, it’s as much about what you’ve done as it is about what’s important about potential employers.”
By building strong relationships and consensus, people will have faith in you to move forward with an initiative, says Rasmussen. Since you’re not the only person who wants to get ahead, be prepared to tell people why you’re the most qualified person.
Stick to the Issues
“You really need to be able to clearly articulate who you are and what problems you solve,” says Barrett-Poindexter. In your career, be aware of what you do to provide bottom line value. Since jobs require specific skills, pick an area to become specialized in.
Take inventory of your key strengths and passions and develop targeted goals outlined in your resume, cover letter, online profiles and talking points for networking and interviews, says Augustine. This will help recruiters and hiring managers understand what you’re great at and looking to do. Otherwise, you may end up networking with people and applying for jobs that aren’t aligned with your goals.
In an interview, show that you’ve researched an organization and talk about how you can bring the organization forward or catch the competition, says Rasmussen. “There’s a difference between people who are always trying to make the company better versus those who are just collecting a paycheck.” Stay informed on the issues and factors impacting company performance, industry trends and competitors.

Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Is Good For BPM

Source of  Article  )http://www.ultimus.com/Blog/bid/36679/Microsoft-SharePoint-2010-Is-Good-For-BP)

Share3
The stories about Microsoft SharePoint becoming a popular platform for document based workflow have been out there for many years now.  The fact that Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services being freeware has attracted many customers and partners to look twice at what SharePoint can offer.  From my perspective of the world, I see customers and partners utilizing SharePoint for:
  • Document Management and Content Management
  • Application Management / Portals
  • Information Collaboration
  • Document-based Workflow
Microsoft SharePoint 2010 improves in many ways in these areas, especially with a new graphical process modeller.  I recently saw a comment from Clay Richardson from Forrester on Twitter that even his 7 year old could use the new Microsoft SharePoint modeller.  Seeing comments like these are encouraging.  In my role overseeing and leading the product direction for Ultimus, the easier and user-friendly the "process" concept is the more gravity it will gain in the business space.
SharePoint does many things well from a document and workflow perspective.  If your company has the know-how and resources to leverage SharePoint, SharePoint Workflow, and Workflow Foundation, then easy and clear document-based workflows can be developed which will serve your company well.  Part of the success with any software platform, including Microsoft SharePoint, is to understand what the platform does do and what it does not do.  Every software platform has limitations which should be respected and recognized.  If not, the benefits and attractions of the software platform that you enjoy today may ultimately have a "corrosion" effect when you attempt to make the software perform in ways it is not intended (corrosion in terms of user attraction and application effectiveness).
BPM and SharePoint

Business Process Management is a natural extension of workflow, and thus, a natural extension for anyone who has already invested in Microsoft SharePoint.  While there is a definite value proposition in automating your document based processes, moving away from manual and paper based work styles, and evolving human based operations into web-based activities, at some point, you will ask yourself "Do my processes make sense?"  Once you reach the point where you need to understand if your company is working smart, and not just hard, then you will want to consider BPM.
Every good BPM Suite in the market today integrates with Microsoft SharePoint.  Being able to leverage SharePoint workflows, documents in repositories, and information from SharePoint Team Sites in a BPMS will allow all of your already invested information to be taken to the next level.  BPM Suites provides the tools and features to give you answers to questions like:
  • How will by processes and process participant workloads trend over the long term?
  • Do I need to invest in more resources (or less resources) to ensure processes execute efficiently?
  • If I want to double my output, what additions and changes will I need to make to my processes?
It is true that all good BPM Suites provide the ability to execute both workflow and BPM, and it is not necessary to always invest in both Microsoft SharePoint and a BPMS if you are need to workflow and BPM.  But if you are already utilizing Microsoft SharePoint for document management and enterprise content management, then BPM is something you will eventually want to consider.  If you find yourself currently asking if you need Microsoft SharePoint OR a BPMS, you should take an inventory of what your process and workflow needs are.  From there, make sure you use the right tool for the right job.

Management lessons from Businessman movie

Management Lessons from the Superstar Film – Businessman

Many films come and go and few remain unique in the history with some purpose – Businessman falls into the unique category of films. Businessman has given strong message to youth and touched up on humanitarians through simple, lively activities many exposes in our day to day lives.

Businessman film that touches upon the Management principles

Creativity: The critical success factor for any business is to be creative and unique in your way – later others follow. Director Puri narrated the story and screenplay different to routine filmy styles – hero introduction, songs sequence – timing etc. Hero starts getting the bugs from traffic scene, establishes connection with policeman, routes to get connect with a leader, wins the confidence of that leader, grows from a local area to city level and later to National level. Every frame presented in a new look and to ensure you are successful with an idea need to have right resource and there comes Superstar Mahesh selection for the film.

Creativity refers to the phenomenon whereby a person creates something new (a product, a solution, a work of art, a novel, a joke, etc.) that has some kind of value- this clearly reflects in Alex Osborn creativity thinking books and similar creative work was displayed by the director.

Lateral Thinking: It is solving problems through indirect and creative approach and the same will be reflected in many works of Edward De BonoThe hero adopts a lateral thinking approach to reach his goal and attack the opponents – starts in Mumbai, expands network and finally attacks National leader. Through out his journey he goes through lateral approach only, even to control the police officer Nazar, he traps heroine (police office daughter) into love – however later he really gives true love to her dear.

Social Skills: These skills are critical to be successful in Business and they have been portrayed in the film very well through discussions with Brahmaji. People who are very good in technical skills mostly become good employees i.e. students who scores 90+ and limited their skills to their space, ends up their lives as lecturers, teachers, good engineers etc but never become successful businessmen.

Brahmaji says he is working in a phenoyal company and will look for a job for Mahesh, hero informs him that you leave your job and will give him a job and shows him how to earn money – it reflects the strength of social skills, understanding the society, humans and their strengths, weakness.

McCormack book on what they don’t teach you at Harvard Business school focus on the importance of social skills

Trust: In any relationship, No trust = no growth, no successIn recent many interviews it was clearly revealed how much Puri <> Mahesh trusted each other and that trust today is creating wonders at Box office. Where ever trust is developed “THE BEST “comes and this can be clearly seen in Mahesh performance and Puri confidence in narrating the character.

In the film too the Hero-Mahesh wins the Trust of his friend, gangsters, his colony, local leader (shiaji Shinde), heroine, heroine father – all this happens in chronological order and step by step and wins the Delhi leaders confidence. Through superb, splendid performance the trust that fans have on Maheshbabu doubled, tripled through Businessman.

Confidence: is must to win. Hero Maheshbabu right from the first scene to end depicts confidence in every word, walk and style either it is with his friends, villains, police officer, lover and politicians. He adopts WIN-WIN strategy and wins the confidence of everyone               Win Win Scenes – giving double the salary to friend Brahmaji

Giving policemen Ganesh his share of 5k
                                              Giving salaries to local gundas
Clearing off the debts of the colony people
Cleverly erasing the approver of Shivaji Shindae in jail
                                               and it continues…..

To be successful in careers or business, one need to have self confidence and confident on what he believes and with whom he works.

Global: In the Globalization era the business strategy is think globally and act local ie Glocal. The hero knows his AIM which at National level, however he tactfully starts his act at local level and then move to National level.

Philosophy: is knowingly understand by few and unknowingly liked by many. In Businessman in a very casual way what director wants to communicate was done beautifully on how humans reacts when they watch Discovery channel – Lion hunting a lady, praying God scenes, eating fish and heroine kazal tempts to sale arts for huge amount and thrills to take car offered by Maheshbabu.

Every business and businessman will have their own or trust some philosophy and the same will be reflected in their organization policies and contributions towards society.

Final Message….
To have a greater impact to the message this should be voiced through right media and right person, Puri selected Businessman film as his media and Superstar Mahesh babu to voice their thoughts – the greater impact to the message came as Mahesh truly believes and follow these concept in his life too.

Aim High, The Sky is the Limit, Be Focus, having burning desire are many Management thoughts we keep hearing in seminars and personality workshops and all these are clearly reflected in Businessman film.

Now Mahesh is not a name, it is a Brand and so the message from his voice is ringing in the minds of youth and storming in the crowds of the public and all “WOODS” For Mahesh and Youth who digest the management principles and follow them “ The Sky is the Limit”.

Thanking you,
